Chambersburg April 23

by John Graham last modified 2010-05-13 19:54

Getting dressed this morning I unloaded a handful of small pebbles and other roadside debris that had found its way into my shoe from yesterday's walk.

We meet Bill in the Hotel Lounge at 7 am and after tea, he drove us to our drop off point about 6 miles east of Chambersburg. We walked about 5 miles along the highway until the sidewalk began leading into the old town center. It was a pleasant town with a fountain in the middle of the square. A plaque told about the Burning of Chambersburg after it was occupied on July 30th in 1864 by the cavalry of General John McCausland, because he did not receive a ransom and in part as a reprisal for the ruin in the Shenandoah Valley.

Back along Route 30 the traffic buzzed, but outside of town we found a field of narcissus where we took a well deserved break. Breaks were usually 5-10 minutes after an hour of walking. Walking comfortably at a little more than 3 mph we could make our goal of 20 mile each day if we walked a little more than 6 hours.

By lunch time we had passed St Thomas and were joined by Bill, who brought a large jug of ice cold water. We sat beneath the shade of a evergreen and chatted about silence and walking, all the things he wanted to know about for the interview in Backpacker.    Audio file Matt's podcast

I played the banjo as we walked a little more today than the day before, Life's Celebration, Latin Soul, and Night rain. With each new time the music sounded better. With about 6 miles let to our day Bill's friend, Matt joined us to walk the final hours, then he drove us back to Chambersburg for the night. The walk today seemed not remarkable, except in the doing of it. another day on the road.

Clouds were gathering and some rain fell.
